FIELD OF STUDY
Any program that leads to an Undergraduate Degree, a Certificate in Technical Studies or a specialized field of study.
NUMBER OF AWARDS
The first scholarship is open to the Construction sector membership only and is for $3,000.00 – to be issued in four increments of $750.00 for the first two years while attending a recognized post secondary institution. If the winner of this scholarship does not return after the first year, the remainder of the scholarship will be forfeited.
The second scholarship is open to all of Local 1620’s membership and is for $1,500.00 to be divided equally for each semester of the first year while attending a recognized post secondary institution. If the winner of this scholarship does not return after the first semester, the remainder of the scholarship will be forfeited to the next person on the list. Dependents of All Local 1620 members are eligible to apply.
The recipient of the Construction Scholarship will not be eligible for the Utility Scholarship IN THE SAME YEAR.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility is limited to dependents of members in good standing with Local 1620 for at least one consecutive year and is the dependent child, natural or adopted, of members active in Local 1620.
A scholarship will not be awarded if a parent or guardian terminates membership within two years following the award of same.
WHERE VALID
The awards are valid at any accredited university or college affiliated with a university or a technical institute.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have completed the requirements for a High School leaving certificate. Candidates must complete the Government Scholarship Exam. They must also be graduating from High School in the same year that they are planning to enter their first year of studies at a Post Secondary Institution. Candidates should ensure that Reference Letters are sent to the Union Office as soon as possible. Selection will be based on an assessment of the Application, the Government Scholarship Exam, References and Extra Curricular Activities. Incomplete files are not considered.
RESPONSIBILITY OF AWARD RECIPIENTS
Award recipients must be prepared to enter course of study in the year of application. Requests for deferment will be considered only in unusual circumstances such as illness or limited admission to a program. The final decision for allowing deferments will be made by the Selection Committee.
Each successful candidate will be asked to submit a short essay on a selected topic. All applicants must send to the Union office a letter confirming admission to a University, College or Technical Institute. Applications and transcripts are at all times the property of the IBEW Local 1620.
ADMINISTRATION
The Scholarship Fund will be administered by IBEW Local 1620 with applications forwarded to a Selection Committee comprised of three members, two of whom are appointed from outside the membership of the IBEW Local 1620.

CLOSING DATE
Completed applications and (3) Letters of Reference are to be sent directly to the IBEW Local 1620, 67 LeMarchant Road, St. John's, Newfoundland, A1C 2G9 and postmarked NOT LATER THAN JULY 31, in the year of proposed study.
